Analysis of Trailer 4

Saving Faith

Saving faith is a powerful, moving and emphatic film that will undoubtedly connect with the audience with all its emotions it sends out. The use of hybrid genres gives this film the typical conventions and connotations that are associated with Hollywood, because of its hard-hitting, gritty genre. This film is about a boy called Jowls, whose life is turned upside-down when his girlfriend Laura is killed by a mafia leader Simon. At the beginning of the trailer we see a lot of camera shots like close up, which gives an emphasis to the characters reactions and body language. When the camera is used to capture the characters emotions this shot used is extreme close up and this builds an exciting feeling for the audience because they don't know what might happen next. Some medium shots are used to show the characters movements and body language for example when they are fighting the camera moves back to show the actions so the viewers are able to see what is happening and make judgement of the characters. There are numerous camera movements used in this trailer, for example when Jowls is standing on the stairs of his house the camera movement used there is "low angle shot", this is because it gives an emphasis on the character and shows his power and rage he is showing as well as 1:24 of the trailer when he is holding a gun and a low angle shot is used, this might indicate power because he is holding a gun. There are more camera movements used like 'point of view shot' and this can be seen at 0:55 of the trailer and this is when one of the characters is point a gun at Jowls, but this is seen from his angle, and this creates a more dramatic scene for the audience to enjoy because they see it from his point of view.

The sound used in this trailer wasn't very dramatic, although is some parts the music does speed up for example when the characters are holding guns, or when they are fighting the music is faster and there is more hype to it and this might be because it enlightens the mood and gives the audience a sense of feeling when watching the trailer, which gives the trailer a bit of authenticity. There are two types of sound used in this trailer diagetic and non-diagetic sound, a diagetic sound simply means dialogue and non-diagetic sound means things like sound tracks. The diagetic sound used in this trailer is mostly dialogues used as written dialogues, for example in between some clips there are written dialogue used like "his world turned upside-down" or "his love gone", these written dialogue gives it a story for the audience to, which is very smart for the directors to uses because as well as showing a story using written dialogue gives it a story. The non-diagetic sound is used a part of the story which helps give this trailer an excellent narrative structure for example when Jowls girlfriend is killed, there a soft mellow sound used to go with the story which makes the audience feel more sympathetic towards Jowls, however after his girlfriend is killed, the music changes because the characters change for instance in 0:47 of the trailer more dramatic actions are seen and more fighting scenes thus the music changes because a new story is told of how the main character Jowls sets out for revenge, and the music is more up beat like a sound track is used as a voice over, which engages the audience even more and gives it more of a suspense.

The editing used sets a certain enigma to the trailer itself, because of the characters body language the editing helps when they use cut. there is a use of fade in and out used, as seen on the trailer at 1:00 to 1:01, this clearly shows that the pace used when editing this part was fairly slow to give it more of a theatrical sight for the audience and each clip gives clear insight and connects very well with the next clip, so the cuts used were excellently produced. There is also a lot of freeze shots used in this trailer for example at 1:20 there is a freeze shot when the boy is pointing a gun at Jowls, and this is used because it intensifies the situation and gives the audience a chance to make judgement of what is going to happen next. The pace of this trailer was very well used with the sound, because at the beginning of the trailer it was quite slow because it showed happy moments with the couple and how they expressed their love for each other, but what the fighting began the pace of the trailer was pretty fast and this may have been because it give the film a bit more edge to it, to dramatise it more. The key use of editing used in the trailer were mostly dissolves and fade in and outs and this was used to give durability and continuity from one clip to another, thus keeping the audience engaged.

The mise-en-scene featured in this trailer were the costumes, lighting, actors, props, length of trailer and representation. The costumes that the actors wear depicts the target audience the directors were aiming for. The clothes mostly represents teenagers because of the hoodies and tracksuits that they wear thus showing this film is aimed at teens, although there is a slight change in the use of clothes and its connotations in this trailer because at the beginning of the trailer Jowls wears normal clothes e.g. jumper and jeans at 0:26 of the trailer, however when he gets angry and goes looking for the men who killed his girlfriend he changes his clothes into hoodies and tracksuits which automatically indicates a realistic approach on teenagers and their clothes. The lighting used in this trailer was high key lighting and low key lighting. For example when high key lighting was used was from 0:14 to 0:20 of the trailer, and this might have been because it indicated happy times when Jowls was with his girlfriend but when he takes matter into his own hand the lighting becomes low key for example from 0:28 to 0:43 its all dark features of the setting which indicates something bad will happen which incises the suspense for the audience and sets an atmosphere, which is a very good technique to use. The actors used in this trailer are teenagers because they can connect to the target audience and set a realistic approach in what teenagers deal with in real life. The props used in this trailer were mostly guns but an odd occasion where cricket bats and shovel was used, and this could be used to raise awareness of the raise in gun crime, although there was a lot of scene where violence was shown, the use of guns were only shown as a means of protecting yourself rather than using it upon someone. The setting of this trailer the outskirts of West London where violence is a major issue and gun on gun crime is a culture. The length of this trailer is 2:01 which is pretty short compared to other trailers, but because of its powerful and moving shots it tells a story very authentically which will certainly keep the audience interested. The representation of this is about a boy whose world is turned upside-down when his girlfriend is murdered and sets revenge on the people who did this to her, basically this teaches people not to take matters into their own hands because bad things will endure their mission.

In my opinion I think this trailer was very capturing because the way it informs, educates and entertains sets its own status and most definitely sets a hype for the audience to enjoy. It's creativiy and structure makes it a hard hitting trailer which characterizes the hardship that people face when they lose a loved one. This trailer sets a realistic band for people to realise that life isn't one big happy place and that everyone faces hardship, but taking matters into our own hands doesn't help. The actors played an outstanding performance and overall this trailer worthy of its excepectional praises. Very well done to the actors and directors of this admirable and inspirational trailer.
